6A Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Opportunity #1 (Economic):

a) The first economic opportunity I encountered was the the increase of 291,000 jobs in the private sector this past month. I found this article on the Wall Street Journal website: https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-private-sector-added-291-000-jobs-in-january-11580911234

b) I believe this provides an opportunity to those in search of a job. More people in the workforce creates more wealth in the economy and more consumer purchasing power.

c) The prototypical customer in this case would be anyone searching for a job.

d) Depending on the level of requirements a certain job has, the difficulty of exploiting these opportunities can vary.

Opportunity #2 (Economic):

a) The second economic opportunity I encountered was the worker shortage occurring in Denver's public transit system. I found this article on the Wall Street Journal website: https://www.wsj.com/articles/public-transit-hits-a-speed-bump-not-enough-drivers-11580994000

b) For the past decade, the city of Denver has gone through a mass expansion of its public transportation, adding hundreds of miles to its bus and light rail routes. However, with the economy being stronger than it was ten years ago, Denver is facing a labor shortage for its drivers. The opportunity that exists here would be revamping Denver's transportation system to be more efficient.

c) The prototypical customer here could be urban planners searching to fix the city's problem or people looking to become a bus driver in Denver, which according to the article, pays $20.58 an hour.

d) I think this opportunity might be difficult to exploit due to the fact that it is a challenging situation that affects the lives of many people who use public transportation for their commutes.

Opportunity #3 (Regulatory)

a) The first regulatory change I found was an article discussing the high likelihood of a new federal privacy law passing in 2020. I found this article on the Forbes website: https://www.forbes.com/sites/waynerash/2019/12/19/regulation-in-2020--new-ways-the-government-will-affect-your-business/#2ca1a8e23f23

b) With many states in the U.S. and countries around the world putting out more legislation concerning consumer privacy, it is only a matter of time before there is a federal change in this legislation. I believe this opportunity exists because people today are putting more trust in corporations and the use of biometrics (TouchID and FaceID) for authentication for data privacy.

c) The prototypical customer would be all customers using some form of their private information to purchase goods and services.

d) I think this opportunity is easy to exploit because there is a high demand for data safety, security and privacy.

Opportunity #4 (Regulatory)

a) The second regulatory change I found was an article discussing the inevitable federal legalization of marijuana. I found this article on the Forbes website: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeadams/2019/12/10/federal-marijuana-legalization-is-a-lock--but-how-when/#60d0f4b72b6f

b) The opportunity that exists here is having more access to marijuana, a plant that has been shown to help people with an array of physical and mental problems.

c) The prototypical customer here would be those who rely on the drug for medical purposes, and those who use the drug recreationally.

d) This opportunity will be easy to exploit, and its just a matter of time before it is.

3.

Opportunity #1: I believe having almost 300,000 new jobs is a huge opportunity for those who are in need of work. The U.S. unemployment rate is at an all time low because of the new jobs out there, securing hundreds of thousands of new individual opportunities for those needing to work.

Opportunity #2: As someone who uses the RTS here in Gainesville, I believe the shortage of drivers for Denver's public transit system is a huge problem that entails a huge opportunity if fixed.

Opportunity #3: The way Americans have valued privacy from the dawn of the country's founding, this opportunity is super important to our culture and the safety of the people.

Opportunity #4: This is an opportunity that is on the forefront of American politics and legislation that could help many people. The marijuana industry in the business sector can also be a huge opportunity.

  1. Hi Ozzie! The bus transit issue for Denver is interesting. Normally the complaint is that there are no jobs out there. This shortage of drivers may be due to people looking for jobs but are unwilling to apply for bus driver positions. If part of the transit system was privatized this may alleviate some of the stress on the public transit system.
