8A Solving the Problem
It seems to be almost a universal problem when it comes to students and issues with learning how to budget their money. Some students may not have this problem at all. Most students go through a grueling and challenging four year period that consists of many trial and error on the budgeting front. Some students get jobs, others don't. Some have scholarships, others don't. It all boils down to learning how to budget, which doesn't have to be as hard as it is.
My solution to this problem would be an elective class at the University of Florida on budgeting and how to do it. I feel as though students have the ability to learn how to budget if it could be presented in a classroom/lecture setting. Additionally, I believe if the class also had an app that could help students monitor their own budgets, it could help these students tremendously.
Hey Ozzie,
ReplyDeleteI think your opportunity of college students struggling to learn and handle their budgets definitely exists and your solution sounds like it could be effective. Offering an elective class on budgeting would help students who need assistance on how to handle their money, but ultimately this is a class that can only teach the basics of money management. Each student has their own specific situation and I believe a workshop could be more effective in teaching these skills. Most students would be interested in taking the class but might not have the room in their schedule or would rather take a class that counts towards their major. Great idea and great post!
Hi Ozzie! As the daughter of a CPA I was raised on spreadsheets and numbers. This helped when it was my turn to manage my finances. I can understand how big of an issue this is as a student that can't work due to a full time schedule. Another solution to this issue, other than an elective course which will cost money for the student to take no doubt, could be a free seminar conducted by other students that have found a way to manage their budget. I think this peer to peer format may be very beneficial.
