21A - Reading Reflection NO. 2
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
- The general theme from The Art of Social Media describes the importance of social media in the 21st century and how it can positively affect your business. The book provides an assortment of tips and tricks that can make your social media seem more professional and attractive to your customer or potential employer. In an essence, the book acts as a textbook on how to properly take advantage of social media to build up a business or personal brand.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT3003?
- I think The Art of Social Media connects a lot with what I have learned in ENT3003. Entrepreneurship, at its core, is selling a product (tangible or intangible) to customers. One way to do that is through word-of-mouth, which seems to be really effective. Social media has become a very powerful tool in marketing and connecting with customers and 'fans'. In his book, Guy Kawasaki shows us an enhanced way of entrepreneurship through social media.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would the exercise involve?
- If I had to design an exercise for this class based on The Art of Social Media, the exercise would involve creating a social media page (on any platform of the students choosing) for their business that they have been developing throughout this semester. The students would use the tips and tricks presented in the book, in an effort to make the page seem more professional and approachable for customers. We could have other students interact with each other on everyone's page to show how customer interaction on social media (an important aspect of the book) generates more attention from other social media users and grows a business.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
- My biggest surprise when reading the book was realizing that social media could be used for growing a business. I had really only thought of social media as a way to connect with friends and family. But when Guy Kawasaki explained that you could use social media to your professional advantage, I was shocked.
